Fleur du Cap releases two unbridled reds in select Unfiltered range
Fleur du Cap has released two rewarding new red vintages in its premium range of Unfiltered wines – the richly complex Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 and the marvellous Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2005.
Although both these wines were already in the barrel when Justin Corrans joined the red wine team as winemaker at The Bergkelder, his rigorous barrel selection and nurturing of the maturation and racking process is evident in the profusion of concentrated fruit flavours.
It was after all the creativity that comes with the profession that lured Corrans into the cellar. “Because winemaking is extremely creative, it gives me the opportunity of being an inventive scientist in the cellar whilst working in a passionate, sociable industry,” said this intrepid winemaker whose philosophy towards winemaking is one of simplicity and precision.
Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 is made of grapes handpicked from a single 11-year old vineyard in the Bottelary Hills region that faces south-west.
“This captivating Cabernet Sauvignon is deep red in colour with delectable aromas of coffee, pencil shavings and blackcurrant on the nose. This full and well-rounded wine bursts with raisins and cherry flavours on the palate with just a hint of plum in the background complemented by a spicy oakiness,” said Corrans.
This robust wine teams well with fillet of beef and roast lamb, rich, hearty dishes and strong-flavoured cheeses.
Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2005 is made of grapes selected from a vineyard in Somerset West and a 13-year old vineyard in the Bottelary region.
This smooth, yet lively wine is deep red in colour with alluring strawberry aromas intermingled with plum and blackcurrant flavours infused with gentle vanilla whiffs. On the palate this medium bodied wine displays fresh, lively berry fruit flavours with just a touch of vanilla ending with a lingering aftertaste.
“This succulent Merlot is perfect with Parma ham, roast lamb kebabs and hearty oxtail or robust Italian dishes,” said Corrans.
Inspired by nature, the premier Fleur du Cap Unfiltered range is a collection of superbly balanced wines set apart by their superior quality and elegance. Handpicked in the vineyard and handcrafted in the cellar with minimal human interference by a devoted team at The Bergkelder, these new generation wines capture and reflect the unbridled expression and quality of the grape. Owing to the hands-on approach in the cellar, these wines are not filtered resulting in rich, complex wines that simply abound with fruit and flavour.
The Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 retails at around R86 per bottle and the Fleur du Cap Unfiltered Merlot 2005 at R80.
