GWYNNE CONLYN’S DELICIOUS TRAVEL WINS PRESTIGIOUS INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Delicious Travel: Culinary Adventures around South Africa, Gwynne Conlyn’s delightful book on her 30-month discovery of gourmet gems has won a Gourmand World Cookbook Award for 2005.

Designed by Johannesburg designer Marlene Willoughby-Smith, Delicious Travel won “Best Local Cookbook” in the category “English: Rest of the World”.

The critically acclaimed showcase of South African food, with recipes to leave home for, is now automatically entered into the competition’s “Best in the World” category. Delicious Travel (published by Jacana in 2004) will now compete against 23 other category winners from around the world. The overall winner will be announced at a gala dinner in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 21 May 2006.
 

“This is a huge feather in the cap of South African cooking – and, indeed, recognition of South Africa as a travel destination,” said Conlyn on hearing the news.

The announcement was made in Madrid by Edouard Cointreau, President of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. The jury commented that South Africa, “has become a high level international culinary destination, centering on Cape Town and … there are great chefs now in South Africa, and many good authors.”

Delicious Travel competed against cookbooks from seven other countries outside the United States and the United Kingdom (which have their own categories). Now in its tenth year, the Gourmand Awards received 6 000 entries from 65 countries, an increase of 15% more entries than in the previous year.
